NZBI Central North Island Branch AGM (9:30 am - 4:00 pm)

As NETS 2012 and the NZ Biosecurity Institute’s national AGM is fast approaching, it is time for the Central North Island Branch to have our Branch AGM.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council has offered to host us and the main meeting room in the Rotorua Office (1125 Arawa Street) has been booked for Monday 21 May.

Proceedings will start at 9:30 AM and we’ll keep the formal part of the meeting short so we can spend more time out in the field (weather permitting).

Hamish Lass and Richard Mallinson will highlight some of Bay of Plenty’s aquatic biosecurity issues and discuss the current programmes to manage these issues. During a visit to Lake Ôkataina you’ll get to see one of the “Weed Cordons” that have been installed around boat ramps and hear how they function. Hamish & Richard will also outline progress on Ôkataina’s Hornwort eradication programme and the weed harvesting & vermicomposting programme at Lake Rotoehu.

While at Ôkataina you’ll get to see first-hand the impacts of dama wallabies on indigenous biodiversity. Following a boat trip down the lake, you’ll visit a pair of exclosure plots that demonstrate the impact that deer and wallabies are having on the forest understorey, while I will discuss the recently reviewed Wallaby Management Plan.

If there are too many people interested in going to Ôkataina (for the capacity of our boats) ….we’ll organise a second trip to Lake Rotoehu to look at the weed harvesting and vermicomposting.

Please confirm your attendance by Friday 11 May.

·

If you accept the appointment, indicate in your response whether you are keen to attend the field trip so we can organise catering, boats & Skippers

Send agenda items for the meeting to me also by Friday 11 May.

· To make the meeting interesting, we can include some short presentations (10 min + 5 for discussion), so let me know if you have anything suitable.

Kia ora …..hopefully we’ll see you on the 21st!
